Two months later, Connelley married Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, heir to a Bolivian tin fortune, who gave her a wedding ring worth a reported $100,000, but she said he mistreated her, and a few weeks later, she escaped from him while at a Rome rehab clinic. Ortiz-Patino reported her missing, but Connelley’s father assured the public from Miami Beach that she was in a safe but secret place.255

Sadly, in 1957, Connelley died of a heart attack resulting from alleged abuse of diet and sleeping pills. She was only twenty-seven years old. Rubirosa’s womanizing continued until he crashed his Ferrari in Paris in 1965, killing him at age fifty-six.256

A happier outcome was in store for the already-mentioned Brownie Schrafft McLean, who captured du Manoir’s attention at a Miami Beach party in the late 1940s. He wrote that she was a “northern ‘snowbird’ of rare beauty” and “competed with success, both in looks and fashion, with every one in this usually attractive gathering.”257
